A Little Disconnected

Winter in the forests of E’ma Thalas, perhaps?

With my current job, I work three really long shifts and one short shift every week, so I have ample time to write.  One thing I’ve noticed this week, though, is that my characters seem to be living in their own little bubbles.

After finishing the first draft of the adult novel, I decided that certain things in the middle didn’t really make sense, so I’ve spent this week rewriting those chapters and editing some of the others.  What I’ve realized in all that is that there’s no real sense, at least to me, of what is going on around the characters.  For example, I currently have one son playing a video game on the TV, while another one is at the table drawing.  The upstairs neighbors just dropped something, and a car went down the road.  All of this is going on outside of what I’m currently doing, so the world has some depth (now the fridge just cut on).  The world of Grevared doesn’t feel like it has that depth to me, not right now.  So, I’m working on getting a better visual of the world in my own head.  That way I can add the dimension I’m looking for on the next round of editing without overwhelming the reader with too much detail.

I really want this to be a work I can be proud of, even if no one but me ever reads it.

I hope this works.

Best wishes!
